The BBC Masterpiece series now features Laura Linney introducing their Austenalia with tidbits like "Miss Austen set out to write a novel about a character nobody but herself would much like."
And boy did she succeed with Emma. Paltrow’s Emma was sooooo smug as to be grateing.
Briony Romola Garai is doing a good job of proving that Emma is, was and has always been totally clueless – her mix-n-matchmaking with Harriet Smith wasn’t an aberration. Jonny Lee Miller, returning to Austen after his adorbs turn in Mansfield Park, is cute, and I will probably tune back in for the final installment when he gets all romantical…
But even with the help of Mr. "Albus Dumbledore" Woodhouse, Messrs Miller and co can’t ground this adaptation in the land of less-than-absolute-frivolity. Sigh.
Ok, Jonny Lee Miller is really funny. He’s constantly looking for a fourth wall to break in order to give the audience a Ricky Ricardo-style look of exasperation.
[ETA: I actually do like Emma’s spunk here – she stands up to Knightly’s condescension and points out that men don’t like women who argue]
P.S. you guys, the Aged P is coming up to town this weekend and it’s going to be epic. We might finally see 75% of everything we always want to see.
P.P.S. Can football pleeeeease be over already? So. Bored.
