This has been said elsewhere and better

But I can’t stand it anymore.

Roman Polanski is an accused rapist who pled guilty and fled the country.

If he were just some guy worked for an accounting firm who had raped a child after giving her drugs and alcohol, would the Hollywood community be outraged that he was *gasp* arrested and expected to do jail time for the crime that he committed?

Would they be signing their names to a bullshit petition? Would they be parsing the difference between rape and "rape-rape"? (Thanks Whoopi, for all your help and advocacy there)

The filmmakers and writers and actors who’ve signed that list are breaking my heart
Darren Aronofsky
Pedro Almodovar
Tilda Swinton

Terry Gilliam.
Sam Mendes.
Steven Soderbergh.

Salman Rushdie

Really, everyone on that list? REALLY?!

Harvey Weinstein weighed in to say Whether the LA County district attorney’s office has its way or not, it is not a story that can have a happy ending. I think Polanski has already paid a horrible, soul-wrenching price for the infamy surrounding his actions. The real tragedy is that he will always, till his death, be snubbed and stalked and confronted by people who think the price he has already paid isn’t enough."

Seriously? The man has lived in Europe, still finds actors and filmmakers willing to work with him, won a freaking Oscar and got a standing ovation, and the tragedy is NOT that there is a woman out there who was raped by him as a child? The "tragedy" is that he might have to serve time because of what he did?? On what planet is a man’s filmmaking career more important than the justice of doing jail time for a crime you already admitted to?

Welcome to Rape Culture, where what you can do with your "talents" if you’re a white male will always be more important than what you did to someone who was female and helpless.

Another great quote from Melissa McEwan

Very few, if any, of the people who have publicly defended Polanski, or who have worked with him, make it their business to champion or associate themselves with admitted child rapists. They make an exception for Polanski for the same reason exceptions have been for other famous, artistic men – directors, writers, actors, comedians, singers, musicians, dancers, choreographers, painters, sculptors, photographers – who have been known to sexually assault women and/or children: Because geniuses get special dispensation.

Because there’s only one Roman Polanski.

So goes the breathless defense of the artiste, while the flipside of that particular coin, because thirteen-year-old girls are a dime a dozen, goes unspoken.

I’m sorry to see this not because I think he should walk, but because the victim has repeatedly said she just wants it to stop, already. I feel she’s been victimized over and over, and now – again. Also by everyone who signed that.

    • It’s extra annoying because half the people on that list use the victim’s wishes as motive too. Funny how if she was demanding he be prosecuted they wouldn’t care, but since she’d be helping Polanski out…
The thing is, it’s not like she’s forgiven and forgotten. She’s also said she feels no sympathy for him. He’s just a wretched excuse for a human being for dragging this out so long.
